Fielco’s IRIS 3030: Unique UV Curable Bonds Opaque Materials
Imagine a UV curable adhesive that bonds two opaque materials. It is possible, and a Pennsylvania-based adhesives manufacturer figured out how.

As with conventional two-part Lewis Acid cured adhesives, the UV light generated super acid in Fielco’s new adhesive product, IRIS 3030, remains active, allowing the adhesive to continue to cure once exposure to UV light has ceased. The reaction rate can be accelerated with heat, or the reaction process can be slowed down by adding components that temporally tie-up the super acid.

Utilizing the properties of cationic cured epoxies makes lamination of UV opaque films via the print, cure and nip process possible. Metalized films, PET (polyethylene terphalate), and opaque PP (polypropylene) can be bonded using this UV curing process. The adhesive is applied to one film and exposed to UV light. At this point, the adhesive is transformed into a tacky PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive). Next, the second film is bonded to the adhesive coated film. If necessary, the laminate can be die cut. The tacky adhesive continues to cure for 24 hours at room temperature forming a tack-free bond.

Fielco Adhesives’ IRIS 3030 masters bonding any combination of plastics, glass and metals whether UV transparent or UV opaque. This new adhesive provides distinct advantages in applications, such as high-speed laminating, where performance and assembly efficiency are critical. In the past, UV adhesives would bond provided that one of the substrates to be adhered was UV transparent. Now, with the capability of bonding any combination of plastics, glass and metals whether UV transparent or opaque, the application opportunities for this new adhesive are endless.

The IRIS 3030 series of adhesives offer the following additional properties:
One-part UV cured adhesives with storage life up to 6 months
No oxygen inhibition
Very low shrinkage
Epoxy adhesive bond strength
Bonding any combination of plastics, glass and metals
Wide range of viscosities can be achieved
Low ions
Low levels of yellowing
Elongation up to 100%
Chemical and thermal resistance
No change in viscosity or wasted adhesives as with two-part epoxy UV hybrids

The IRIS system is customizable to meet specific open time, bond strength, flexibility, and viscosity requirements.

Fielco’s Orion 2000: A Breakthrough Fast Setting, Low Temperature Curing One-Part Epoxy Adhesive
Huntington Valley, PA – December 28, 2009 – The search for a one-part epoxy adhesive that can bond thermoplastics such as ABS and PVC is over. Fielco Adhesives’ Orion 2000 is a breakthrough one-part epoxy adhesive with low temperature curing and fast setting that eliminates many of the shortcomings of other 0ne-part adhesives. Temperature- sensitive components can be processed, and Orion 2000 can be used to create strong bonds to plastics, glass and metals.  In addition, properties such as viscosity, modulus and hardness can all be adjusted to suit your needs.

Orion 2000 has clear application advantages in assembly operations that require fast setting adhesives to maximize finished product through-put. This need is becoming even more important as mechanical fasteners are being replaced or cannot be used with thermoplastic parts. While two-part epoxy based adhesives cured with Lewis acids, mercaptans, acrylics, polyurethanes or polyureas are fast setting, they can cause production control issues. Once mixed, these types of two-part epoxies often have a very short working life and are also commonly prone to the following problems:

  • Excessive exothermic reactions (if too large of a mass is mixed at one time)
  • Moisture sensitivity adversely affecting the adhesive’s cure rate and performance
  • Surface contamination poisoning the cure reaction

And unfortunately, fast setting room temperature cured adhesives simply cannot match the mechanical properties and chemical resistance achieved with elevated cured adhesives.
Now, where elevated cure temperatures can be tolerated, snap cured epoxies do offer some relief. Such systems are mixed, packaged, and then rapidly cooled to -40° C to stop the curing reaction. These adhesives can be cured very quickly at moderately high temperatures (less than 2 minutes at 150°C), but require cure times as long as 30 minutes at lower temperatures (100° C). They also have a short working life when thawed to room temperature, and adhesive waste is created. In addition, the adhesives must be shipped and stored at -40° C, so shipment and storage costs are increased substantially.
Fielco Adhesives’ Orion 2000 advanced one-part epoxy adhesive line addresses many of these aforementioned shortcomings. Orion 2000 is a low temperature curing, fast setting epoxy adhesive with the properties outlined below:

Gel Time                        Cure Time (when bond line reaches temperature)
80° C 540 sec                  600 sec
90° C 150 sec                  180 sec
100° C 30 sec                  40 sec

In addition, Orion 2000 has a shelf life of 2 months at 25°C and more than 3 months at 0°C. This line of adhesives is also non-corrosive and non-DOT hazardous – simplifying transportation and improving worker safety.

One-Size-Doesn't-Fit-All: Fielco Adhesive’s Three Complete Product Options Approach
Huntington Valley, PA, October 14, 2009 – Fielco Adhesives understands that, in manufacturing, a “one-size-fits-all” approach often times is not in their end-users’ best interest. That’s why they offer three complete product options, allowing unparalleled flexibility in supporting their customers’ adhesive needs. Each customer’s unique production line requirements will often make selecting an appropriate solution from preset, or “off the shelf,” formulations a challenge. Imagine trying to fit a square peg into a triangular hole, and you get the idea. Often the outcome can be an adhesive system that is shoehorned into a process and made to work at less than optimum efficiency. Imagine instead, the supplier providing specific solutions for each customer’s unique circumstances in order to improve assembly operations.

Many adhesive suppliers are simply not structured to adjust their formulations and subsequently only supply stock adhesives to manufactures. However, this constraint adversely limits the end user’s ability to maximize the performance of their end product, as well as the production efficiency. Whereas Fielco’s three complete product line options satisfy any project need:
1. Standard Products – These stock adhesives are industry qualified and well established.
2. Adjusted Products – Fielco has the ability to take stock adhesives and adjust them to meet manufacturers’ specific needs such as color, viscosity and reactivity.
3. Custom Products – For even more flexibility, one-of-a-kind adhesives can be created for specific applications.

Whether it’s a temporary epoxy adhesive, one-part or two-part epoxy adhesive, or a UV curable epoxy or acrylate, Fielco’s formulation chemists can fine tune formulations to meet the specific requirements for each application. Key properties such as viscosity, mix ratio and reactivity are adjusted to meet manufacturers’ adhesive needs rather than trying to force an application to fit a stock adhesive, which often results in inefficiency or adhesives that just don’t work. Fielco’s materials research laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical and testing equipment that is leveraged to develop the most demanding applications, while ensuring product quality and consistency.

Fielco’s adhesive specialists utilize their three complete product line offerings to develop adhesive process solutions for a variety of industries. Fielco has optimized and improved processes for applications such as industrial brushes, filter bonding, temporary protective coatings, paint applicators, abrasives converting, magnet fabrication, ceramic and glass bonding, die attachment and more. Where performance and assembly efficiency are critical, Fielco Adhesives has the solution.

Learn How Fielco Adhesives’ Best Practices Strive for Zero Defects and 100% Order Accuracy for Customers
Huntington Valley, PA – September 8, 2009 – The term “best practice” denotes the following:
A process that is believed to be more effective at delivering a particular outcome than any other technique. The idea is that with proper processes, checks, and testing, a desired outcome can be delivered with fewer problems and unforeseen complication.

Related to adhesive process solutions, Fielco Adhesives takes the concept of following best practices to an elevated level of precision. Utilizing their innovative 39 Point Quality Checklist and 22 Point Shipping Checklist, Fielco ensures their products’ quality, accuracy and consistency thus avoiding costly mistakes for their customers. Fielco customers can operate with confidence in their adhesive’s quality and delivery.

Fielco’s production quality control is outlined by their proprietary 39 Point Quality Checklist. The 39 Point Quality Checklist ensures adhesives are manufactured to each customer’s specifications every time. Chief Adhesive Scientist, Tony Ring notes, “We insist on stringent quality control. Before shipping, our products undergo numerous tests to ensure that each and every custom adhesive is delivered to our customers with zero defects. Each and every lot of product is sampled and processed through rigorous rounds of quality control and are tested extensively before product packaging begins.”

Adhering to their 39 Point Quality Checklist enables Fielco to deliver adhesives with zero defects – saving customers the costs and disruptions associated with inconsistent adhesive quality. When placing an order from Fielco, customers can be certain of the following:
• All manufacturing and packaging specifications meet exact order requirements. For example:

• Robust testing and quality control procedures have been performed on each adhesive batch manufactured.
• Fielco’s highly trained Production and Quality Team utilizes redundant testing methodology to make certain all products have zero defects.

After Fielco manufactures product with the 39 Point Qualtity checklist, the material is prepared for shipping. At this point in the process, Fielco’s proprietary 22 Point Shipping Checklist is utilized. The 22 Point Shipping Checklist is designed to ensure with 100% confidence that the details associated with an order match each customer’s exact requirements, the quantity ordered matches the shipment, that all proper paperwork is included and that the packaging is perfect. Among other benefits, the 22 Point Shipping Checklist allows Fielco customers utilizing two component systems to not have to worry about an A-side epoxy mixing with a B-side epoxy due to a mislabeleld container thus avoiding the costly mistake of the wrong adhesive component being placed into production.

With Fielco’s 22 Point Shipping Checklist, customers never have to question what was ordered and what is delivered to their facility:
• The packaging is perfect.
• Orders shipping to customers are correct.
• Shipping documentation is correct
• All federal and state shipping regulations are followed.
• Products are once again checked for correctness with a lot number verification.
• Before leaving Fielco’s facilities, the shipment accuracy is cross-checked by two of Fielco’s highly trained Production and Quality Team.

With Fielco Adhesives’ best practices in place, efficiencies are passed down that have a true bottom-line impact. Ken Jelinek, Operations Manager for Camel Grinding Wheels, remarks, “Fielco’s broad range of adhesive solutions has enabled us to cut costs, while improving product quality. They always have what we need in stock and are very flexible in meeting our customers’ ever changing demands. Fielco’s combination of on-time service, pricing, quality, and new product development are simply the best in the industry."

Fielco Adhesives’ 39 Point Quality Checklist and 22 Point Shipping Checklist work in tandem to ensure all products are manufactured with absolutely zero defects and are packaged and shipped with 100% accuracy and adherence to customer specifications.

Fielco Adhesives Has Strong Bond with Schaffner Manufacturing: A Costly Manufacturing Challenge Is Resolved.
Huntington Valley, PA – August 21, 2009 – Allen Schaffner, VP for Schaffner Manufacturing in Pittsburgh, PA, a manufacturer of high quality flap wheels, was faced with a challenge when the adhesive used to bind together their flap wheels didn’t hold up to their rigorous quality controls.  Even after voicing concern about the problematic adhesive, he received no response from his supplier, who seemed uninterested and unwilling to resolve the issue.  Continuing to use this supplier would pose a threat to product quality, so Schaffner knew it was time to seek out a new vendor.

This history of unresponsive support prompted Allen Schaffner to contact Fielco Adhesives.  Fielco, based in Huntington Valley, PA, is known for providing innovative adhesive solutions.  Their adhesives are subject to stringent quality controls and are developed based on customers’ specific requirements.

Tony Ring, Fielco’s Chief Adhesive Scientist, was quick to respond to Schaffner’s problem.  While onsite at the Pittsburgh plant, Ring assessed the situation and came to an immediate understanding of Schaffner’s needs.  Fielco Adhesives quickly custom formulated an innovative 2-part adhesive system specifically designed to meet the required performance properties of Schaffner’s flap wheel application.  Fielco’s adhesive solution greatly increased the strength and consistency of Schaffner’s flap wheels while eliminating adhesive cracking, which improved the functionality of their finished product.

Allen Schaffner notes, “I went from having zero customer support to having a real partnership with Fielco.  Tony (Ring) wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves.  He developed a solution that is specific to my needs by working with my crew and understanding my process.  Fielco actually took the time to understand our process and meet our requirements. Period.”

Schaffner has been a satisfied customer of Fielco for over five years now and is glad his bad experience with “that other supplier” is long gone.  Fielco’s Tony Ring adds, “Innovative solutions, great customer service and unmatched quality standards are the cornerstone of our company.  Before working exclusively with Fielco, Schaffner Manufacturing was in serious jeopardy of losing customers because of poor adhesive in their wheels - now they have been able to satisfy wavering customers and have added many new ones as well.”

Fielco Adhesives provides distinct manufacturing advantage with innovative brush setting adhesive, SURE CURE™
Fielco Adhesives’ innovative product SURE CURE™ alleviates inefficient manufacturing caused by lengthy adhesive penetration and curing times that have plagued the brush industry.  Waiting for brush-setting adhesive to dry has always been an obstacle to in-line processing of paintbrushes.  Room temperature cure times of 4-6 hours create a disruption which interrupts and significantly slows the flow of brushes through the assembly process. The greatly reduced cure time required by SURE CURE™ epoxy adhesive enables in-line pouring of the adhesive that fastens the bristle or synthetic filaments to the brush-head.

Fielco has carefully engineered a flexible set of parameters into SURE CURE™ so the overall paint brush manufacturing industry can use the product over a range of production line speeds.  Avoiding traditional 4-6 hour cure times at room temperature, manufacturers can expect to dramatically increase throughput when using SURE CURE™.

The long curing time required by earlier adhesives has always been costly to the brush industry in terms of rejected product. Under pressure to produce, when deciding whether the adhesive had hardened sufficiently to resume manufacturing, plant personnel sometimes incorrectly estimated the penetration state of the curing adhesive, resulting in product rejection. With Fielco’s SURE CURE™, where processes are speeded by oven-generated higher temperatures, only 2 minutes are needed after pouring to evaluate penetration depth. Cure times as short as 5 minutes are easily achievable with optimized processing conditions.  Brush assembly plants preferring to operate at ambient temperatures will also benefit from the rapid set speed of SURE CURE™.

Additional applications include an infrared curing as short as 15 seconds and another variant which uses an ultraviolet light as an accelerant. Because of the capital investment required, however, those two techniques have proved too costly for the paint brush industry.  It seems clear, though, that technologically driven factories, including those making composite, laminated and abrasive products, are turning to fast setting epoxies like SURE CURE™ for their in-line processing to gain a competitive advantage in today's global market.

Using Fielco’s brush setting adhesive SURE CURE™ provides many distinct manufacturing advantages.  Benefits of SURE CURE™ include:

  • Fast setting
  • Durable bond
  • Adheres to various metals, synthetic fibers, natural filaments, woods and plastics
  • Provides superior resistance to solvents, petroleum products and water
  • Low odor
  • Designed for in-line pouring followed by rapid heat curing
  • Very low shrinkage

Based in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, Fielco distributes its adhesive products throughout the world. Fielco’s Chief Adhesive Scientist, Tony Ring, is available to discuss any questions or unique concerns regarding specific applications of SURE CURE™ related to distinct manufacturing processes.

Specialty Adhesives Manufacturer Drives to Minimize Environmental Impact
Even super-strong adhesives can be made in a more Earth-friendly fashion. That’s the philosophy of the scientists at Fielco Adhesives, who are expanding their “green products” line that is gentler on the environment – without sacrificing adhesive performance.

Chief Adhesive Scientist Tony Ring says that the products, which range from temporary peelable coatings to tough epoxy pastes, demonstrate the c0mpany’s commitment to always keep the planet’s welfare in mind.
“Our 1-part epoxies dramatically reduce the dependence on hazardous corrosive materials that 2-part epoxies often require,” Ring explained. “Whenever possible, we also make our products with renewable raw materials.”

According to Ring, Fielco generates less than 0.5% of non-hazardous waste per pound of finished product, and less than 0.1% hazardous waste per pound of finished product. 99.5% of the firm’s complete product line is non-solvent-based – good news for clients concerned about the potential environmental impact of their adhesives.

Fielco works to minimize cure temperature and reduce the cure time of its heat cured adhesives.  Subsequently, the smallest amount of energy usage possible is required for processing, which results in a reduced carbon footprint for end-users.  Fielco also supplies ultraviolet light curable adhesives, which require less energy and further reduce carbon footprint.

Beyond their product line, Fielco embraces a “green” philosophy in their operations as well, maintaining a near-100% paperless environment and offering clients instructions on how to handle adhesive products safely. The company utilizes a distillation unit to clean and recycle in-house cleaning solutions, and reusable totes for both raw and finished products.

“Going the extra mile to help the environment is absolutely worth it to us,” said Tony Ring, “and we feel confident that our clients and partners agree.”

Specialty Adhesive Company Increases Quality, Speed and Easy-Of-Use With One-Part Epoxy Adhesives. One-part bonding offers dramatic improvements over old two-part systems
When Fielco Adhesives examined the technology behind traditional two-part adhesives, they saw a big opportunity for a little simplification. “While a necessity for some applications, two-part adhesives make more of everything: more work, more hazardous waste, and more of a chance for error,” said Chief Adhesive Scientist Tony Ring.

The result? Fielco now not only offers one-part epoxies, but offers clients the option to upgrade from their old two-part systems, resulting in countless savings across the board.

“There’s less clutter, because there’s no need for expensive two-part dispensing and metering equipment. There’s less labor, because one-part epoxies don’t need as much oversight from operators. I could go on and on,” said Ring. “It’s such a dramatic difference.”

One part epoxy adhesives offer many benefits which include: more consistent adhesive application, reduced waste, simplification of inventory control and, improved worker safety resulting from the elimination of volatile corrosive curing agent components often used in two-part epoxy systems.
In addition to keeping workers out of harm’s way, one-part epoxies are also much friendlier to the environment, since they don’t require the often-caustic chemicals that are frequently used in the two-part epoxy processes.

Tim Enchelmaier of Industrial Brush Company, who switched to the one-part process, is one of many Fielco customers convinced of the improvements.  Industrial Brush Company, located in Fairfield, New Jersey, has worked with Fielco Adhesives since the 1980’s.  Originally a customer for two-part epoxies, the Company was experiencing some challenges with that adhesive.  A portion of the mixed two-part material not used during the day’s shift would be too far advanced the following day and subsequently could not be used. That material would then need to be disposed of; sometimes the amount was small, but often it involved large amounts of wasted adhesive.  Furthermore, the two-part epoxy was porous, allowing fluids to get through the adhesive and rust the materials underneath.

Mr. Enchlemaier requested that the adhesive supplier work on a custom-formulated one-part epoxy for use in the assembly of 100% of the industrial brushes the company produces.  This assignment was no easy feat.  The requirements included: that it not be porous, that it be debondable for the purposes of replacing brushes, that it maintain a shelf life of a minimum of 4 weeks, and that it seal to the various brush products the company manufactures – many of which are nylon.  Since the nylon filaments used in Industrial Brush Company’s brushes are affected, and in some cases, destroyed by the higher heats required to cure one part epoxies, Fielco had to also create a product that would cure at a lower temperature.

“The one-part epoxy that Fielco Adhesives’ custom created for us satisfies every one of our pre-set requirements,” remarked Mr. Enchlemaier.  “It cures in amount of time we need, using a low temperature.  It is consistent every time, and does not change from batch-to-batch.”  He went onto say, “We originally tried a one-part from another supplier and it was wearing out our pumps and our moving parts.  Fielco’s one-part epoxy they custom made for us seals the product very quickly, is not porous and is not abrasive.”
One-part epoxies can be applied to assembly applications as diverse as thermoplastic and metal bonding, filament winding, electronic assembly, and structural adhesives. Cure temperatures as low as 80 degrees Celsius are possible, and the epoxies maintain shelf life at 25 degrees Celsius for over three months.
