Position: Chemist

Organization: Fielco, LLC

Location: Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania - 40 minutes north of Philadelphia

Scope: This Chemist position at Fielco, LLC encompasses two major functions and a number of other minor responsibilities associated with lab work. The two major responsibilities involve all aspects of Product Development and assisting the Technical Director in day to day laboratory and production activities. The two responsibilities combined will take up 90% of the position's time. The other 10% of the time will be devoted to functions such as literature searches, MSDS and Tech Data generation, preparation of seminars and reports, and product testing.

Responsibilities:

  1. Chemist responsibilities:
    1. Coordinating product development programs as outlined by Technical Director. This includes program goals, time line, written correspondence. Written weekly reporting, and direct communication with Technical Director.
    2. Formulation and compounding of experimental products.
    3. Testing of both experimental and line products.
  2. The use of mechanical, thermal, and electrical testing instrumentation. This includes method determination, sample preparation, generation and interpretation of test results.
  3. Assume managerial responsibilities of laboratory and production in Technical Director's absence. This includes production scheduling and support issues, overseeing quality assurance, and coordinating activities of the technical staff to insure continuity of research programs.
  4. Quality control functions including the generation of data on experimental batches as well as statistical plots of numerous lot data points.
  5. The written preparation of competitive testing reports and the preparation of seminars.
  6. Interfacing with customers on technical assistance issues as needed. Coordination of field testing and installation of existing and developmental products.
  7. Contributions of innovative ideas with regard to all Company operations and Research and Development programs.
  8. Familiarity with hazardous material and hazardous communication requirements and procedures.

Minimum Job requirements:

  1. Bachelors degree in science with a concentration in chemistry or equivalent. Three to five years experience in coatings, inks, or adhesive product development and manufacturing.
  2. Computer literacy with such programs as Lotus 123, graphics programs and word processing.
  3. Good inter personnel skills - this is essential in dealing with customers and internal staff.
  4. Excellent record keeping skills and a demonstrated mastery in mathematics.
  5. An ability to respond to changes in the business environment as well as job function.

Training: Due to the high visibility of this position, an extensive training period will be provided. This will include on the job training in the following areas:

  1. Polymer and material science specific to adhesives and coatings.
  2. Computer training in specific programs relevant to lab and plant operations.
  3. Training on thermal analysis and testing equipment.
  4. General chemical safety and handling.
  5. Quality control and quality improvement.
